Dog Training Advice
Anyone who gets a new puppy is always looking for dog training advice. This includes
such things as potty training the dog and teaching commands, such as Stay, Sit, and
Down. Training a dog means always trying to stay one step ahead of the dog and this
takes time and patience. In short, it takes a lot of hard work to trains a dog and you have
to be consistent. One piece of advice that professional trainers will always give you is to
praise the dog when it does follow your command and to reward it with treats.
Teaching your dog tricks such as roll over, shake hands or to lick your hand are part of
obedience training, but they are also games for the dog. When you want your dog to learn
something you have to make it into a game that provides rewards at the end. Pretty soon
the dog will learn that when he behaves in a certain way that he will get a reward.
Sometimes it is better to ignore behaviors that you do not want the dog to use or when
using the word "NO". For example, if you dog wants to play fetch at the same time you
want to read the newspaper, throwing the toy away at the same time as you say no is
actually sending a mixed message to the dog. By throwing away the toy he thinks you
want to play so he doesn't get the meaning of the word you say. If on the other hand you
do nothing and just say no, the dog gets the idea that this is not the time to play.
The best advice for dog training is to learn the basics in a dog training school. This is
where both you and the dog learn the basic commands and you can practice them at
home. You do have to remember to use the same techniques as the trainer uses, such as
positive reinforcement by praising and rewarding the dog and by training through playing
games.
