Crate Training Your Dog

Crate training is a very controversial subject in the dog owner's world but crate training
your dog can be the most rewarding thing you could do for your dog and for yourself if it
is done properly. Now if you find that your schedule is too busy to take the time to get
your dog used to the crate then maybe a set of earplugs purchased with the crate is the
answer for you. If you need him crate trained in a hurry, then you are in for a bit of a
rough time but it can be done.

One of the things you should do if your planning on crate training your puppy in a hurry
is to get him outside and wear him completely out before you put him in the crate. If he is
tired, he is more apt to sleep and not kick up a fuss. He should have also gone potty so
that both bladder and bowels are empty. Place a favorite toy into the crate or a piece of
clothing that you have worn recently and have not washed. Make sure it is an old shirt,
because if it is a new one you may never wear it again especially with young pups. They
tend to chew on everything.

Take your crate with your dog inside to your bedroom and place it near your bed. If the
dog cries during the night just poke your fingers through the holes so that the dog can be
reassured that you are still there. If your dog doesn't settle down after a while, take him
out and take him to where he usually goes potty. Don't play with him and keep this
excursion at a very low level. Bring him back to his crate again and place him inside.
This way he'll soon realize that nighttime is not play time.

Once you have gotten through two or three nights of this routine, your puppy will quickly
catch on that this is bedtime and he's expected to sleep. Once you have accomplished
this, you will have done the biggest favor you could have for both you and your dog.
