Your Dog Training Guide

Dog Obedience Training

You enroll your dog in obedience school so he will learn the most basic commands but there is
so much more in dog obedience training. You can take him to levels that are offered to make him
more acceptable to yourself and society. If you are practicing training at home, make sure you
keep your sessions short so your dog won't lose interest when it becomes dull and boring.

The single most important act of training is the reward for good behavior. The more times a dog
is rewarded, the more he will learn and it is essential that you use repetition. The next and almost
as important part of training is the praise you give your dog after he has done what you asked
him to. There can never be enough praise. Your dog will love it and it will make him feel he's
the greatest thing since sliced cheese.

In training school, you will learn how to handle your dog and get the best out of him that you can
possibly get. You will also learn not to use the words "no", "get off", "get down" and so much
more. Dogs get so used to negative language that they tend to ignore it after a while and go about
their merry business of doing what they want. If they get used to wonderful praise from you, then
when you have to reprimand them for something it will take on a much greater meaning. If you
do have to reprimand your dog, try to make it as clear as possible to him what it is you don't
want him to do.

You will also learn that a correct reprimand is short and to the point. After school training you
should need no more than a voice command to get the results you want. To reprimand a dog, you
really have to catch him in the act of doing wrong and be very direct. This is the only way he is
going to learn not to do that again. Never hit, kick or slap your dog because this only creates new
problems and causes existing ones to get worse
