Dog Training Basics

Many people have their own idea of dog training basics, but the bottom line on this is that you
want your puppy to learn how to sit, lie down and come on command. This is not so difficult that
you can't do it yourself, although there are many good schools in today's market where you can
take your puppy to learn these basic things.

The main thing you have to remember is to have lots of patience and have your pocket full of
tasty treats to reward your dog when he obeys the commands you want him to learn. Start your
training with teaching him to sit on command. This will take no more than a few minutes a day
for a few days and you and the puppy will have it mastered.  When you begin get down as low as
you can to puppy's level, have some treats in your hand and pass your hand over his nose. He
will automatically sit when he smells the treats. The first time he sits may not be for very long
but don't forget to praise him for his efforts. Repeat this daily but not for extended periods of
time as puppy will get bored with the game no matter what amount of praise you give him.
Expect him to stay seated for longer periods before giving him the treat then praise him for his
efforts.

Getting a puppy to stay and not come until you call is a little more difficult especially if your
puppy is very young. You will find that they are so enthusiastic to play that this is a little more
difficult for them but again there are ways to do this without too much fuss. Get someone in your
home to hold the puppy in one place at first and say the word "stay" which can be used with your
hand held in front of him, walk a few feet away from him, turn and say the word come as the one
that's holding him lets him go. When he runs to you give him a treat and lots of praise. Repeat
this several times during the day and you will soon your puppy will be able to listen to your
command of stay and come.
