Dog Training Collars If your looking for dog training collars, you will find that there are many different types of them on today's market and you may find it a little confusing when shopping for one. Depending on what you have in mind for your dog there are two main types of head halters. One is called the Halti and the other is called The Gentle Leader. Both have good qualities but The Gentle Leader is the better one both in design and control. It sits behind the dog's ears and there are two nylon straps around the muzzle with the straps connecting under the chin. Using this, it is known that where a dog's nose goes he will follow.
The Halti is a close second to The Gentle Leader. The Halti has a bit more complicated design that interferes a bit with its effectiveness and if your dog struggles it can cause spine or neck injury.
Then there is the scary looking prong collar. This collar can be effective if you have a very large dog, but it won't work as well for those who yank at the leash all the time. The look of it is enough for some people because it looks like medieval torture. This collar is designed to pinch the neck of the dog with the prongs but it is also designed not to injure the dog but will make him think twice about bolting ahead and dragging you with him. If you try this wrapped around you leg you will find it don't really hurt. This would not be good for dogs that strain on the neck leash constantly. This is used more for correction of the habit and not for an everyday collar.
Then there is the choke chain, which is not recommended at all. Unless you are an expert with dogs this collar is best left alone. This collar can cause permanent damage if not used in the proper way. This collar does exactly what it says and chokes the dog into submission. No matter what collar you use, make sure it fits properly around your dog's neck and that it won't physically hurt him in any way .
